The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has confirmed that it has restored power across the country after a massive outage plunged the country into five hours of mandatory darkness, without notice. According to Kenya Power, power was restored by 2 am on Thursday, July 30.
“We are pleased to report that power supply was fully restored to all affected customers by 2:00 am today. We truly appreciate your patience and support as our teams worked to restore service,” read KPLC’s latest statement.
Earlier at around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night, Kenya Power confirmed a widespread power outage affecting several parts of the country.
In a statement issued at 9:05 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, Kenya Power said the outage had affected customers in Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya and parts of the Central Rift.
The utility, however, noted that parts of the North Rift and Western regions remained on electricity supply.
“We wish to inform our esteemed customers that we are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting customers in Nairobi, Coast, Mt. Kenya and parts of Central Rift. However, parts of North Rift and Western regions are on supply,” the company said.
Kenya Power said its technical teams were working to restore electricity to the affected areas as quickly as possible.
“Our technical teams are working to restore supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” the statement added.
The utility apologized for the inconvenience caused, assuring customers that restoration efforts were ongoing.
Kenya Power Responds to Nationwide Blackout
The statement came after numerous Kenyans took to social media to report electricity outages in different parts of the country, prompting speculation that the blackout was nationwide.
At around 8:30pm several users on X said they were experiencing outages in Nairobi, Mombasa, Mwea, Lower Kabete, Ngong and Gigiri, raising speculation that the disruption could be nationwide.
X user ashh!! (@A_Ashhh18) questioned whether the outage was nationwide, posting: “Nationwide black out??” while tagging Kenya Power.
Another X user Alinur Mohamed (@AlinurMohamed_) claimed there was a nationwide power blackout.
“There is nationwide power blackout in Kenya. Kenya Power is yet to give an explanation,” he commented.
X user Lawrence Kitema (@lawrencekitema) was also among those reporting the outage, asking, “Power outage? What is happening with Kenya Power? Is anyone else experiencing a blackout?”
Planned Maintenance
Earlier, the utility had issued a scheduled planned electricity maintenance works in Nairobi West on Thursday, July 30, with power expected to be interrupted from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The outage will affect areas including Msufu Road, Sumba Road, Naimei Road, ICC Church Mombasa Road, Kifaru Crescent, Swara Crescent, Nairobi West Hospital, Hotel Rio, Nyayo Stadium, Madaraka Estate, Strathmore University, Langata Technical College, Madaraka Primary School and adjacent customers.
In Nyeri County, electricity will be interrupted between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Jumbi Farm, Msafiri and Gatuamba, as well as Mweru, Ngamwa, Kabuta and Kariara, with the outage also affecting surrounding areas.
In the Coast region, customers in Mrima, Lunga Lunga and Vanga in Kwale County will experience a planned power interruption from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, in Mombasa County, the outage will affect Liwatoni, Autoport and nearby areas from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as Kenya Power undertakes scheduled maintenance works.
