The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the shooting and death of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, a prominent Kenyan clinical psychologist and mental health researcher, in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.
The DCI said homicide detectives and forensic experts have launched investigations into the incident. After the incident, DCI officers processed the scene and recovered evidence. The investigative unit now says it is pursuing leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has commenced investigations into the fatal shooting of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, which occurred this morning, 29th July 2026, in Upper Hill area of Nairobi,” read the statement in part.
The statement comes after police commander Issa Mohamud said investigators were pursuing leads into what he described as a targeted killing.
Dr. Mutiso Shot While Travelling in Uber Vehicle
According to the DCI, preliminary investigations indicate that Dr. Mutiso had requested an Uber service for transport when she sustained fatal gunshot injuries under circumstances that remain under investigation.
The incident happened in the Upper Hill area, near Kenyatta National Hospital, a location that hosts several major medical institutions and government offices.
The DCI said officers immediately responded after receiving the report, with police and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) detectives visiting, securing, and processing the scene.
“Immediately upon receiving the report, police officers, supported by Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) detectives, promptly visited, secured and processed the scene. Relevant forensic exhibits were recovered and documented for analysis, while witnesses were interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. Detectives also visited the medical facility where the victim had been taken,” stated DCI.

Who Is Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso
Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso was the Head of Research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation (AMHRT).
She was recognized for her work in child and adolescent mental health, substance abuse, community mental health, and the development of culturally appropriate approaches to addressing psychological challenges.
Her research focused on improving access to mental health services for underserved and marginalized communities.
She also served as a principal investigator and co-investigator in several local and international mental health research projects, contributing to evidence-based approaches in the prevention and treatment of mental health conditions.
Among the initiatives she was involved in was Project HOPE, a global health research program focusing on homeless people living with severe mental illness in Africa, where she co-led research.
