President William Ruto has appointed Samuel Muchina Nyaga, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate in the recently concluded Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, as a member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission.

The appointment was announced in a special issue of the Kenya Gazette published on Wednesday, July 22.

“I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Samuel Muchina Nyaga to be a Member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, with effect from the 22nd July, 2026,” the Gazette Notice reads.

In the same Gazette Notice, the President revoked the appointment of Amos Chege Mugo as a member of the commission.

What Role Samuel Muchina Will Play in New Role

As a member of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, Samuel Muchina will help oversee the restoration, rehabilitation and sustainable management of Nairobi’s river basin.

His responsibilities will include:

  • Helping develop and implement programmes for the restoration and regeneration of Nairobi’s rivers.
  • Working with national and county governments, development partners, civil society and the private sector to coordinate river restoration initiatives.
  • Monitoring compliance with environmental laws and supporting measures to protect river ecosystems.
  • Contributing to strategies aimed at reducing pollution and improving the ecological health of Nairobi’s rivers.
  • Supporting resource mobilization for river restoration and environmental conservation projects.
  • Promoting public awareness and community participation in protecting and restoring Nairobi’s rivers.

The commission operates under the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development and is responsible for coordinating efforts to transform Nairobi’s river corridors into cleaner, safer and more sustainable environmental and socio-economic assets.

Who Got Fired?

Amos Chege Mugo, whose appointment to the Nairobi Rivers Commission was revoked by President William Ruto, is an economist and public policy expert with experience in economic planning, public administration and business development.

He previously served as Deputy Chief Economist in Nyandarua County’s Governor’s Service Delivery Unit, where he oversaw the implementation and evaluation of government projects.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Nairobi and has worked in both the public and private sectors.

Before his appointment to the Nairobi Rivers Commission, Mugo served as Deputy Chief Economist in Nyandarua County’s Governor’s Service Delivery Unit, where he monitored government projects, evaluated programme implementation and supported policy execution.

His career has also involved financial management and the development of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), with a focus on improving service delivery and operational efficiency.

In politics, Mugo contested the Kinangop parliamentary seat in the 2022 General Election on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket after winning the party’s nominations. He finished second in the general election.
