Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has reportedly been attacked by a group of armed individuals in Kisumu while on a routine visit to the Acacia area and Java Restaurant for a haircut.
According to a press release dated April 8, 2026, while in Java, Osotsi met a friend and interacted cordially with members of the public for approximately thirty minutes.
The Senate office noted that a group of attackers “questioned his political stance”, demanding to know why he supports a one-term presidency, and physically manhandled him.
“The Office of the Director of Communication, Vihiga Senate, wishes to bring to the public’s attention a deeply disturbing incident involving Vihiga Senator, Godfrey Osotsi, who was earlier today assaulted by a group of armed goons in Kisumu,” read part of the release.
Senate Condemns Attack on Osotsi
Members of his security detail restrained themselves to avoid firing in a public area, preventing further harm to civilians.
Following the incident, Senator Osotsi was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
In a statement, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna announced that Osotsi was airlifted to Nairobi for medical attention.
CCTV footage from the restaurant is expected to aid in identifying and apprehending those responsible.
The office of Vihiga Senate has urged the National Police Service to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice, highlighting that this isolated incident should not tarnish the reputation of Kisumu residents, who have consistently welcomed the Senator.
Osotsi Kicked Out as ODM Leader
Osotsi has been vocal about his differences with the ODM party leadership over the decision to support President William Ruto’s re-election.
This resulted in his removal as the party leader, announced on March 27, 2026, during the Special Delegates Convention (SDC) after no member proposed or seconded his nomination for the deputy party leader position.
Alongside Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Osotsi has criticized the party’s alignment with a broad-based government, arguing that it does not serve the interests of the common mwananchi.
In the lead-up to his removal, Osotsi had pushed for ODM to field its own presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
During an ODM Joint Parliamentary Group meeting on March 3, 2026, he tabled proposals aligned with the Linda Mwananchi faction, widely seen as a dissident wing of the party.
Osotsi also criticized a 10-point agenda signed with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in 2025, highlighting the rival party’s failure to implement the agreement.
