Anthropic is expanding its Claude Startups programme to more founders. Any company founded in the last five years, or funded in the last two, can apply. Approved companies get:
- A free year of Claude Team.
- USD 1,000 (about KES 130,000) in credits for the Claude API.
- Discounts and credits from other software companies.
- Office hours with Anthropic’s Applied AI team.
Anthropic values its own part at up to USD 7,000, or about KES 908,000.
The Claude Team seats. Claude Team is the paid plan for small organisations, with shared billing and admin controls. Seats come in two types, Standard and Premium, and the programme covers up to five Premium seats for companies new to Team. Premium costs USD 100 (about KES 13,000) a seat each month when billed annually. Five seats for a year is USD 6,000, or about KES 779,000.
The API credit. The Claude API is the pay-per-use route developers take to build Claude into their own products. The USD 1,000 credit works like this:
- You claim it in the Claude Console after approval.
- It expires six months after it is granted.
- It only works on Anthropic’s own API, not when you reach Claude through Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI.
So the credit is worth claiming when you already have something to build and run on Anthropic’s own API.
The USD 45,000, or about KES 5,839,000, comes from the Claude Startup Stack, a set of offers from independent companies. Anthropic’s footnote says it is the combined maximum of every offer at partner list prices as of September 2026. The partners, not Anthropic, give those benefits, and the same footnote warns that a company “may not be able to receive or combine all offers”.
The announcement names Linear, Lovable, ElevenLabs, Granola and Hex. The programme page lists these terms:
| Partner | What it gives |
|---|---|
| ElevenLabs (AI voice) | 12 months free plus 33 million characters |
| Hex (data analysis) | 6 months free on the Enterprise plan |
| Granola (meeting notes) | 3 months of Business free, up to 10 seats |
| ClickHouse (databases) | USD 5,000 in cloud credits, or about KES 649,000 |
| Gamma (slides) | 25% off the first year of Gamma Pro annual |
You need:
- A Claude Console account.
- A company email that matches your website’s domain.
- A short description of your project.
Most reviews take minutes, and manual ones take two to three business days. Once in, companies also get 45-minute office hours with Anthropic’s Applied AI team every two weeks, plus access to Founder House, hackathons and meetups.
The page lists no supported countries and no exclusions. It does not mention Kenya or Africa either. A Kenyan company founded after October 2021 passes the age test, but whether Anthropic approves a given Kenyan application, and whether each partner honours its offer here, is not stated. Last month we covered Anthropic’s USD 3,600 (about KES 467,000) stipend for student club leaders, which did take applicants from Kenyan universities.
Our read: the programme is the Team seats and the USD 1,000, both of which Anthropic controls. The partner discounts are a menu. Take what you would have bought anyway, and treat the headline total as a ceiling.
