NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 – Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has appointed John Kipngetich Mosonik as its new board chairman, replacing the outgoing chair Alfred Agoui as the electricity generator pursues its long-term expansion strategy.

The appointment was made during a board meeting held on November 2, 2026, with Mosonik taking over the leadership of the board at a time when the company is seeking to strengthen its position in geothermal energy and expand its electricity generation capacity.

Mosonik brings more than 35 years of experience spanning engineering, telecommunications, infrastructure development, energy and corporate governance in both the public and private sectors.

“The Board of Directors of Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Eng. John Kipngetich Mosonik, CBS, EBS, as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, during a Board meeting held on Monday, November 2, 2026.”

“Prof. Eng. Mosonik is an accomplished technocrat and distinguished leader with over 35 years of executive experience spanning the public and private sectors, particularly in telecommunications engineering, infrastructure, energy and strategic governance.”

He is already a non-executive director at KenGen, where he chairs the Strategy Committee, giving him an existing role in overseeing the company’s strategic direction.

His appointment comes as KenGen implements its G2G 2034 strategy, which seeks to advance its energy ambitions and strengthen its position as a regional energy solutions provider.

Before joining KenGen’s board, Mosonik served as Principal Secretary for Infrastructure, where he spearheaded the development of 6,000 kilometers of rural roads across all 47 counties, according to the company.

He has also been involved in telecommunications and oil and gas projects and contributed to the development of national industrialisation policy.

Academically, Mosonik holds a Doctorate in Business Administration in Strategic Leadership from Northcentral University in the United States and a PhD in Strategic Management from Moi University.

He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (Telecommunications) from the University of Nairobi and is a registered engineer with the Engineers Board of Kenya.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, he serves as Chancellor of Rongo University and Associate Professor of Business Strategy and Digital Transformation at Kenya Highlands University.

His appointment comes as KenGen continues to position geothermal generation as a central component of Kenya’s electricity mix, with the company pursuing investments aimed at expanding its generation portfolio and supporting the country’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.
