The Kenya Hospital Association (KHA), which owns and operates The Nairobi Hospital, has reconstituted a new Board of Management following its Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on August 25, 2026.
The announcement was made in a notice dated August 28 and signed by Dr Barcley Onyambu, who was re-elected Chairman of the Board during the AGM.
Onyambu was elected Nairobi Hospital Board chair in March 2025. He had been a Board member since 2024 and has chaired key committees, including Human Resources, Infrastructure, and Audit & Risk.
“Following the successful Annual General Meeting held on 25 August 2026, the Kenya Hospital Association Board of Management has been newly constituted. It brings together a new team of leaders to provide tactical oversight and guide the Association in promoting its mandate,” the notice read in part.
Nairobi Hospital Announces New Kenya Hospital Association Board
The hospital also congratulated the new board and wished its members success as they take up their responsibilities.
The new board comprises 11 members who will oversee the association’s affairs and provide strategic direction as it advances its mandate in the healthcare sector.
Samson Mbuthia Kinyanjui will continue serving as Vice Chairman, having been elected to the position on December 4, 2024.
Dr Agnes Gachoki will serve as Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, while Dr Edwin Rono will serve as Vice Chairman of the committee.
Gachoki was elected to the position on August 25, 2025, while Rono became vice chairman on March 16, 2026.
The board also includes Dr Magdalene Muthoka, Dr John Mwero, Akinyi Gaya Valerie, Anne Njuguna, Moses Ondaba, Wycliff Wanzala and Lekek Chebii.
Njuguna, Ondaba, Wanzala and Chebii were elected at the August 25, 2026 AGM, while Muthoka, Mwero and Gaya Valerie were elected on December 4, 2024.
According to the notice, the board was constituted in accordance with Articles 38 (a), (b) and (e), 40, 42, 43, 46 and 47, as well as Article 51 of the Articles of Association.
The notice said the changes followed the successful conduct of the KHA Annual General Meeting held on August 25 at 2 p.m.
Onyambu signed the notice as Chairman of the Board of Management of the Kenya Hospital Association.
Nairobi Hospital Leadership Dispute
The changes come against the backdrop of a prolonged leadership dispute at The Nairobi Hospital, one of Kenya’s largest private hospitals.
The dispute has involved competing claims over who legitimately occupies the chairmanship of the KHA Board of Management, with factions linked to Onyambu and Prof Herman Manyora issuing conflicting positions.
In July 2025, a faction led by Manyora said Onyambu had been removed as chairman through a board resolution. The hospital rejected the claim, saying Onyambu remained the duly elected chairman.
The dispute later moved to court, with the Court of Appeal in October 2025 dealing with an application arising from a High Court case involving KHA, its Board of Management, Onyambu and senior officials of the association.
The leadership dispute also attracted the attention of Parliament.
In March 2026, the Senate was asked to investigate concerns surrounding governance, regulation and service delivery at The Nairobi Hospital.
Senators raised questions over board elections, the legitimacy of office holders, the powers of trustees and major financial decisions, including proposed borrowing and capital expenditure.
Unlike conventional private hospitals, The Nairobi Hospital is owned by KHA, a membership-based organization registered as a company limited by guarantee.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale told the Senate in March 2026 that the hospital is member-owned and has no conventional shareholders.
