Kenya has recorded a second death from Ebola (Bundibugyo virus disease), following the death of a 65-year-old woman who was receiving treatment after contracting the disease.
In a statement issued Friday evening, Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth said the woman was the third confirmed case in the country and a close family member of the first patient who died from the disease.
The woman, who was under quarantine, developed symptoms on October 13 and was admitted to an infectious disease unit the same day, where she received supportive care before succumbing to the illness.
The Ministry of Health said the woman’s family had been informed and that arrangements were underway, in consultation with the family, for a safe and dignified burial in accordance with public health protocols.
The latest death brings the number of fatalities to two among nine confirmed cases, with the remaining seven patients receiving care in two isolation facilities.
Dr. Amoth said all confirmed cases remained within one cluster of known contacts, with no evidence of community transmission.
He urged Kenyans to continue observing public health precautions, including avoiding contact with the blood and body fluids of sick people and refraining from touching or handling the bodies of people who die from suspected illnesses.
The public was also advised to wash hands regularly with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms such as fever, weakness, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea or unexplained bleeding.
Members of the public can call the free emergency hotline 719 or use the Ministry’s WhatsApp chatbot on 0700 719 719 to report suspected cases or seek guidance.
The Ministry extended its condolences to the bereaved family and appealed to the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as it mourns.
Dr Amoth reiterated the need for compassion and support for affected families as health teams continue to manage the outbreak.
