The coalition said it intended to hold a peaceful demonstration to protest the high cost of fuel and its impact on the cost of living.

Protests over high fuel prices and the rising cost of living are scheduled for Monday, October 26, in Nairobi, with the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders announcing plans to march from Kimathi Street towards State House.

In a notification dated October 22 and addressed to the Deputy Inspector-General of the Kenya Police Service, the coalition said it intended to hold a peaceful demonstration to protest the high cost of fuel and its impact on the cost of living.

The organisers expect between 500 and 900 participants to take part in the demonstration, which is also intended to draw attention to the economic pressures facing Kenyans.

The notification was copied to the Officer Commanding Station at Central Police Station in Nairobi for attention and coordination.

The coalition said it would promote peaceful and orderly participation while respecting the rights of members of the public throughout the demonstration.

“We undertake to promote peaceful and orderly participation and to respect the rights of the public throughout the demonstration,” the group stated in the notification.

The planned protest comes amid concerns over the cost of living, with fuel prices being a key issue because of their potential impact on transport costs and the prices of goods and services.

The demonstration is expected to bring renewed public attention to calls for measures to address the financial pressures associated with rising living costs.

However, the notification does not specify the particular measures the organisers want the government to take to address fuel prices.

The police had not indicated their response to the planned demonstration in the notification provided.

Further details on security arrangements, traffic management and any official response from the authorities were not included in the letter.
