Rangenyo Parish Priest Fr. Bernard Nyangeri has led a peaceful public demonstration in Rangenyo village, Nyamira County to condemn brewing, selling and consumption of illicit brews in the locality.

Fr. Nyangeri stated that the menace had caused unwarranted deaths in the area, while contributing to underdevelopment, increased cases of crime and the overall moral decadence in the society.

The clergy therefore mobilized church members and the general public for a peaceful procession over rampant drunkenness that was claiming lives of local young people, leaving families in abject poverty.

Fr. Nyangeri lamented that many students with a promising future had dropped out of school due to either lack of school fees and other essential learning necessities or intoxication from the illicit brews and other drugs.

“I am greatly perturbed  that the leading cause of death for all the requiem masses I conduct within my area of jurisdiction are linked to alcohol and most of the deaths recorded are of our youth, who leave behind very young and vulnerable orphans staring at a bleak future,” he said.

For the past six months I have buried over eight people whose circumstance of  death were alcohol related and this worrying trend compelled me to mobilize everyone for support in ending this illegal business in our area, so that we can be assured of raising sober and visionary children, who will popularize our community for good reasons.

It’s overly worrying that we are raising a generation that has been deprived of proper parental care and guidance, lost in vision and easily lured into consumption of illicit brews and crime, which always finds them at loggerheads with law enforcement officers and the national government administrative officers, said the Cleric.

Deeply moved by the alcohol problem, Fr. Nyangeri recently engaged in a peculiar  mission of visiting all the  homes known for illicit brewers in Rangenyo, where he  conduct Holy mass the brewers, urging them to look for alternative businesses for they were likely to wipe out a whole generation with their illegal stuff.

He appealed to the entire Rangenyo community to support the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) and other stakeholders in fighting the illicit brews for posterity.
