Vihiga County Commissioner (CC), Jeremiah Mwai Gicheru, has assured residents of enhanced security during the holiday season, urging them to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace and order.
Gicheru was speaking today at Masana Friends Secondary School in Vihiga County, after delivering Presidential Speech to mark Mashujaa Day celebrations.
He said security officers would intensify patrols across the County to protect residents and prevent crime during the festive season.
“Usalama dictates that you cooperate with security agencies , and security starts with you,” he stressed, calling on residents to share information with security agencies to help address security concerns.
The County Commissioner urged residents and political aspirants to maintain peace as the country prepares for the 2027 General Election, warning against tribal politics that could undermine unity.
He called on Kenyans to make electoral decisions based on leadership and development record rather than tribal affiliations, urging aspirants to conduct peaceful campaigns and promote cohesion among communities.
Gicheru further expressed concern over the rising cases of child defilement in Vihiga County, warning perpetrators that they would face the full force of the law.
He said the government would strengthen efforts to address sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), adding that plans were underway to open another court in Emuhaya to enhance access to justice.
The County Commissioner cautioned parents and guardians against settling child defilement cases privately, insisting that such matters must be reported to the relevant authorities for legal action.
“Those involved in child defilement must be brought to book and face the law. We will not accept attempts to settle these cases at home,” he warned.
He urged parents to closely monitor their children during the school holidays and protect them from abuse and other forms of exploitation.
Gicheru added that the administration would convene a meeting with relevant stakeholders to develop strategies for addressing gender-based violence across the county, including conducting public sensitisation campaigns in all six sub-counties.
He also warned against alcohol and drug abuse, saying the government would continue working with stakeholders to address the problem and safeguard the wellbeing of residents.
The County Commissioner called on the public to support government efforts to promote security, protect children and maintain peace throughout the holiday season and the upcoming election period.
