The suspect was arrested at his residence in Kawangware Stage 56 following intelligence linking him to an alleged electricity meter theft syndicate.

Police have arrested a suspect and recovered 12 suspected stolen electricity meters during an intelligence-led operation in Kawangware, Nairobi county.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers conducted a search of the suspect’s house, where they discovered 12 electricity meters believed to have been stolen.

“The suspect was cornered at his residence in Kawangware Stage 56 by Police Officers following crucial intelligence linking him to the said theft,” the DCI said in a statement.

The recovered meters were secured as exhibits to support ongoing investigations into the alleged theft and possible illegal trade in electricity equipment.

Detectives have also enlisted the assistance of Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) personnel to help advance the investigations and establish the circumstances surrounding the recovery of the meters.

The suspect remains in police custody as officers complete the necessary procedures ahead of his arraignment in court.

The DCI said it was working closely with KPLC to pursue individuals suspected of stealing electricity meters and engaging in the illicit trade of the company’s equipment.

The agency reiterated its commitment to dismantling criminal networks involved in the theft and distribution of electricity meters, adding that investigations would continue to identify and apprehend other individuals who may be connected to the suspected syndicate.

The arrest comes amid efforts by law enforcement agencies and electricity sector officials to address the theft of utility equipment, which can disrupt services and impose additional costs on affected customers and service providers.

The DCI has urged members of the public with information about electricity meter theft or related criminal activities to report anonymously through its toll-free number, 0800 722 203, or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

The suspect’s culpability will be determined through the legal process.
