Kericho County Commissioner (CC) Omari Ali has raised concern over low voter registration, revealing that only 1,048 people had registered in the preceding three months against a target of 235,000 new voters, ahead of the next general election.

Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kapsaos Division in Kericho East Sub-County, Ali urged chiefs, elders, political leaders and residents to work together to encourage all eligible citizens to register as voters and participate in the electoral process.

The CC called for household-level mobilization, urging residents to encourage eligible family members and neighbours to register, while stressing the importance of maintaining peace and cooperation as the country prepares for the next general election.

Ali also called on residents to support the government’s efforts, aimed at combating illicit alcohol by reporting illegal brewers and sellers to chiefs, who would coordinate with police to take appropriate action.

He cited enforcement operations in Kapsoit, where illicit alcoholic drinks had been recovered and suspects arrested and taken to court, urging the public to share information with local administrators to strengthen the fight against the illegal trade.

The CC warned that illicit alcohol was contributing to insecurity, fights and family difficulties, noting that some parents spent money on alcohol at the expense of their children’s education and other household needs.

He urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s welfare, particularly during school holidays, by ensuring they were properly supervised and protected from unsafe environments.

Ali said the government was working with relevant offices, including that of the County Women Representative to address security concerns and strengthen child protection efforts.
