When you pass along the Kisumu–Kakamega Road, near Riat Hills, one structure immediately catches the eye, a large beautifully designed mansion standing on the hillside overlooking the busy highway.
For years, the house has captured the attention of motorists, residents and social media users with several stories around it.
The mansion, known for its unique architecture and scenic location, has been at the center of discussions, with many questioning its ownership, history, and whether it was really abandoned.
The property became one of Kenya’s most photographed private homes, with travelers often stopping to admire its design and take pictures.
However, its fame also brought a wave of rumors, claims of mysterious occurrences, and questions about why such a beautiful home appeared unoccupied.
Unique House built along Kisumu-Kakamega Highway
In a spot check by The Kenya Times, the property was enclosed by a brick perimeter wall, while its black metallic gate with grills provides a clear view of the compound from outside.
Inside the compound, the mansion features a well-arranged landscape with flowers planted along the pathways and near the staircase leading up the hillside.
The curved driveway leading to the house is clean and neatly maintained despite the property’s elevated location on Riat Hills.
The entrance of the house is accessed through a staircase with red-coloured steps, complemented by white finishing along the upper sections.
Its main structure is built using strong brickwork, with white exterior finishes separating each floor, giving the mansion a modern multi-level appearance.
The house is topped with a Box Profile roofing system, adding to its contemporary architectural style.
According to reports, the house located near the Mamboleo Junction area along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, was built as a personal dream project by its owner, identified as Shantel, a Kenyan surgeon.
Shantell acquired the land while she was still in her early 20s and developed the property into a luxurious residence featuring a distinctive design and expansive outdoor spaces.
The mansion’s elevated location on Riat Hills gives it a commanding view of the surrounding area, making it stand out among other homes along the busy highway.
Its terraces, gardens and architectural style turned it into a landmark for travellers heading in and out of Kisumu
Over time, images and videos of the house circulated widely online, with many users describing it as a mystery house or haunted mansion because of the perception that the property had been left empty.
The attention led to several unverified stories about its history and the reasons behind its appearance.

Rumours Surrounding the Mansion
The absence of the owner from the property for long periods fuelled speculation on social media. Some claims suggested that the owner had died, while others alleged that the house was linked to unusual events.
Earlier reports about the house had suggested that security concerns contributed to the perception that the property had been abandoned after alleged reports that the owner experienced repeated break-ins after moving into the house because of its open visibility from the highway, eventually choosing to relocate abroad.
However, these claims have not been independently confirmed by the owner. Many people who live near the mansion don’t know the owner and the story behind it.
In a video shared online, Imali, who spoke with residents around the area, stated that the property was once put on sale but, due to the stories around the mansion, it was not sold. Also, the property is always manned by a caretaker who visits the place to trim the grass and flowers and clean the compound.
Other rumors claim that the land parcel is cursed and ghosts visit during the night and clean the compound.
