NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 30 — For nearly two decades, Peter Mwaniki’s working life has revolved around long hours behind the wheel of a truck, travelling different routes to provide for his family.
The 47-year-old father of four now faces a different kind of journey after winning Sh102 million in the SportPesa Mega Jackpot, correctly predicting the outcomes of all 15 matches in a draw held last Sunday.
Mwaniki did not initially know he had won.
He learnt of the result after SportPesa contacted him, turning what had been an ordinary period in his working life into an unexpected opportunity to rethink his family’s financial future.
For a man accustomed to earning a living through years of work on the road, the windfall represents more than a change in his bank balance.
Mwaniki says it could help ease the pressures of raising four children and give them opportunities that have not always been within reach.
“I have spent most of my adult life working hard to provide for my family, so this is something I never imagined would happen. My first thoughts were about my wife and children. I want them to have opportunities that perhaps I could not always afford to give them, and to know that their future is more secure,” he said.
He added that the money would give the family an opportunity to make important decisions about the years ahead, although he has yet to settle on how to use it.
Rather than immediately changing his lifestyle, Mwaniki says he intends to continue with his job while taking time to consider his options.
“I don’t have any immediate plans. This came as a surprise, and I don’t want to make any rushed decisions. I’ll continue with my day-to-day job for at least the next five months as I take time to consider my next course of action,” he said.
A new chapter, with decisions ahead
Mwaniki was unveiled as the first person to win the SportPesa Mega Jackpot in 2026, receiving the Sh102 million prize after correctly predicting all 15 match outcomes.
Speaking during the unveiling, SportPesa Head of Marketing Esther Kange’the said the win carried significance for Mwaniki and his family.
“Every jackpot winner has a unique story, and Peter’s is particularly special. Behind the Sh102 million prize is a father who has spent years working to provide for his family,” she said.
Kange’the said the company hoped Mwaniki would make considered decisions that would benefit his family in the long term.
Mwaniki was unveiled alongside Caroline Nyakundi and Gaudencia Sella, who received Sh2.19 million and Sh3.5 million respectively in Mega Jackpot bonuses.
For Mwaniki, however, the immediate priority appears to be taking stock of the unexpected change in his circumstances.
After years spent navigating roads for a living, he now has time to consider a different route for his family’s future.
