Some lives don’t have room for pause, and Nyakio knew it. Hers was a journey of fighting against all odds when the deck of cards is constantly stacked against you. She was no stranger to life’s misfortunes, but this was a big one.
Beep! Beep! The machines went. There was a strange smell. “Maybe disinfectant,” she thought to herself. The room was so white and bright, and it bothered her eyes. Then she saw her older child’s puffy eyes. “What’s wrong?” Nyakio wanted to ask, but something running from her mouth to her throat prevented her from speaking up.
Panic set in. Yet she couldn’t scream or move. In fact, her body wasn’t doing much of what she wanted it to do. Then the doctors came in and confirmed her fears. She’d lost her mobility from her waist downwards. The next few weeks were spent piecing together the details of the car accident that changed her life, killed their driver and left some of her catering crew with injuries.
They’d been travelling after their biggest catering event yet. Nyakio, a teenage mother of two children, had worked her way up from cleaning hospital floors and toilets, assisting in Mijengo crews, and being a domestic help. It was when she worked for an employer who ran a catering company from her kitchen that Nyakio got to assist and become a decent cook.
These skills helped build her business shortly after, and she supplied food to office workers, then expanded to meal prep, private cooking, and eventually catering events. All this in an effort to care for her children, now attending university and high school.
The impact of the accident was disorienting, and a part of her hoped that the doctors were wrong. When she finally came to terms with her new situation, the faces of her children were a reminder that responsibilities and bills still awaited her. Having faced challenges and uncertainties, Nyakio had taken precautions by taking out insurance covers, in addition to her savings.
The Absa Ultimate Protector Plan eased her transition as she figured out how to adapt to her unexpected healthcare needs and changes in her source of livelihood, all while ensuring that her kids stayed in school. Even when everything changed, life continued.
For many of us, life changes when we are diagnosed with critical illnesses, accidentally become permanently disabled, or are hospitalised. Things also change drastically for loved ones when the primary provider dies. Granted, we can’t prevent most of these unfortunate circumstances, but we can plan ahead to mitigate their impact by obtaining personal insurance.
The Absa Ultimate Protector Plan offers a comprehensive plan that covers natural and accidental deaths, critical illnesses, natural and accidental permanent disability and an accidental plan that only covers accidental death and accidental permanent disability. As the policyholder, you have the option to choose a sum assured of between Ksh. 500,000 and Ksh. 10,000,000.
Critical illnesses come with tremendous physical, financial, emotional and mental burdens. The Absa Ultimate Protector Plan offers 30% of the sum assured with limits of up to 3M upon the first diagnosis of illnesses like kidney failure, strokes, heart attacks, major organ transplant and cancer. Given the cost of treating such diseases, this could be quite helpful.
The plan also offers cash back benefits, where you receive 50% of the first year’s premiums after every third year, as long as the policy remains active within the three years.
For those with comprehensive plans, in the unfortunate event of an accidental death after 12 months of an active policy, your nominated beneficiaries receive 200% of the sum assured.
Absa’s Ultimate Protector Plan also offers several options for added benefits, including a daily payout of 0.2% of the sum assured in the event of accidental hospitalisation. This benefit comes with a separate premium but can be extended to include a spouse or children, and would pay for accidental hospitalisation of between 4 and 30 days.
