Iran’s Security Chief Ali Larijani’s handwritten letter appeared a few hours after Israel’s military stated that it had eliminated him.
The message posted on his X account on March 17 honors Iranian Navy martyrs killed in a recent attack as the war between Israel and Iran escalates.
“On the occasion of the funeral ceremony for the valiant martyrs of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Navy: Their memory will forever remain in the heart of the Iranian nation, and these martyrdoms will strengthen the foundation of the Islamic Republic’s Army for years to come within the structure of the armed forces. I beseech the Almighty God for the highest ranks for these dear martyrs,” read the note.
Earlier, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said that Iran’s security chief Ali Larijani had been killed in an Israeli strike, though Tehran has not confirmed.
Iranian Official Larijani Posts Note Amid Conflicting Death Reports
On March 16, Ali addressed Muslim-majority nations, outlined Tehran’s position, and reaffirmed that the country will not relent in its confrontation with the United States and Israel.
Larijani called on Islamic nations to unite in support of Iran, suggesting that, with few exceptions, many have failed to respond to what he described as acts of treacherous aggression.
Further, he questioned the commitment of some governments to the principles of Islamic solidarity and implied that their lack of support contradicts religious duties.
He defended Iran’s regional military actions, which several Gulf countries have condemned as violations of sovereignty, and indicated that Tehran sees no room for compromise in the ongoing confrontations.
Larijani also stressed that Iran does not seek to dominate its neighbors. He concluded by asserting that a united Islamic world could ensure security, progress, and independence for all Muslim-majority states.
“The unity of the Islamic nation, if realised with full strength, is capable of guaranteeing security, progress and independence for all its states,” Larijani said.
Who is Ali Larijani?
Ali Larijani was born in Najaf, Iraq, in 1958, and pursued his studies in Tehran.
Following the Islamic Revolution, he advanced through the ranks of the Iranian state, holding positions including culture minister, head of state broadcasting, and serving for more than a decade as speaker of parliament.
He later became Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, playing a pivotal role in shaping the country’s engagement with global powers and supporting the 2015 nuclear agreement.
Often seen as a pragmatist within the Iranian system, Larijani’s stance became increasingly hardline in recent months as tensions with Israel and the United States intensified and diplomatic efforts stalled.
The United States had offered a reward of up to $10 million for information on senior Iranian military and intelligence officials, including Larijani, as part of a list of 10 figures associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
