The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has commenced the recruitment of a substantive Director General, opening applications for one of the most influential positions in Kenya’s energy sector following months of leadership transition at the regulator.
In a vacancy announcement published on Tuesday, EPRA invited “suitably qualified and experienced” Kenyans to apply for the position of Director General, with applications closing on September 9, 2026.
The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and oversee the regulation of electricity, renewable energy, petroleum, and related subsectors, according to the advert.
The recruitment comes months after Dr Eng Joseph Oketch was appointed acting Director General following the resignation of former chief executive Daniel Kiptoo.
At the time, EPRA’s board said it would recruit a substantive holder of the position through the prescribed legal process.
EPRA Seeks New Director General
EPRA is one of the country’s most influential regulators charged with overseeing the electricity, petroleum and renewable energy sectors.
The authority is responsible for licensing players in the industry, setting and reviewing tariffs, enforcing safety and quality standards, and protecting consumer interests.
The successful candidate will serve as the Authority’s chief executive officer and secretary to the board, overseeing the implementation of board decisions, policies, and programs.
The Director General will also supervise activities involving electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and supply, as well as the importation, refining, transportation, storage, and sale of petroleum products.
The office holder will also oversee the development and regulation of renewable energy activities, including solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, tidal energy and bioenergy projects.
Other responsibilities include managing the Authority’s assets, finances, and human resources; ensuring compliance with the Energy Act and other relevant laws; strengthening corporate governance; implementing strategic plans; promoting research and innovation; and overseeing risk management and internal control systems.
The Director General will also advise the government on energy regulatory matters, represent the Authority in engagements with local and international stakeholders, and spearhead initiatives to enhance consumer protection and public awareness.
To qualify for the position, applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as engineering, law, economics, finance, energy, environmental studies, or physical sciences from a recognized institution.
Candidates must also have at least seven years’ experience in senior management, including at least two years in the petroleum and energy sector.
Professional qualifications, membership in a recognized professional body, and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity are also mandatory requirements.
How to Apply
Interested and qualified candidates were asked to submit their applications, along with copies of relevant certificates, to EPRA’s designated recruitment email by 5 p.m. on September 9, 2026.
The authority said the appointment will be on a three-year contract renewable once, subject to satisfactory performance and the mandatory retirement age.
EPRA further noted that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and will be required to present original and certified copies of their academic and professional certificates, national identity card, birth certificate, and clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Credit Reference Bureau (CRB), and the National Police Service (NPS) during interviews.
The recruitment comes at a critical time for the regulator, which has in recent months overseen electricity tariff adjustments, managed public consultations on proposed retail electricity tariffs and continued supervision of the country’s petroleum and renewable energy sectors.
The incoming Director General is expected to provide strategic leadership as EPRA navigates key policy, pricing, and regulatory issues affecting consumers and industry players alike.
