The Ministry of Interior and National Administration, through Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo, has announced new recruitment opportunities for chiefs and assistant chiefs following approval by the Public Service Commission (PSC).
In a statement on November 3, Dr Omollo said the vacancies would be advertised soon and encouraged qualified chiefs and assistant chiefs to apply.
“As we bring these units into operation, we want qualified Kenyans, including those already serving their communities, to take up these opportunities and help make government services more accessible,” he said.
According to the PS, the recruitment is part of the government’s efforts to operationalise newly gazetted administrative units and bring services closer to residents.
Government Expands Grassroots Administration
Dr Omollo made the announcement during an engagement with National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) and village elders ahead of the inauguration of Kikumbulyu Division in Kibwezi, Makueni County.
He later presided over the official opening of the division and installation of its first Assistant County Commissioner.
The Principal Secretary said the expansion of administrative units would address geographical barriers that have forced some communities to travel long distances to access government assistance.
Kikumbulyu Division has 127 villages managed by national government village elders across Ngulu, Kathyaka, Ngandani and Ndetani sub-locations.
PS Omollo challenged chiefs, assistant chiefs and village elders to improve service delivery, professionalism and accountability in their respective areas.
“The government expects these officers to be proactive in identifying challenges affecting their communities, escalating issues requiring intervention and ensuring that government policies and programmes reach the intended beneficiaries,” he said.
PS Omollo Outlines Welfare Plans for Chiefs and Village Elders
The Principal Secretary also outlined measures to improve the welfare and operational capacity of chiefs and assistant chiefs.
These include training, increased operational funding, decentralised distribution of uniforms and the processing of delayed promotions.
He said the Ministry was working to conclude outstanding promotion cases, adding that paramilitary and legal training had strengthened officers’ preparedness for their responsibilities.
On village elders’ welfare, PS Omollo highlighted the KSh3,000 monthly stipend introduced under President William Ruto’s administration.
Payments began in July 2026 and are ongoing, according to the Principal Secretary.
He further outlined plans to provide village elders with smartphones to strengthen their operational capacity.
President Ruto had earlier announced that the National Treasury would allocate funds for the purchase of the devices and provide medical insurance for village elders and their families under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
PS Omollo also commended grassroots administrators for helping maintain peace, resolve disputes and connect residents with government institutions.
