Kenyan Army Officer Commissioned in UK After Military Training: What the Training Entails

Kenyan Army officer Second Lieutenant Isaac Lenkume has been commissioned after completing military training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

In a statement on August 7, Kenya’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Maurice Makoloo, congratulated Lenkume following his commissioning, praising his performance and conduct during his training.

Makoloo said the descriptions of Lenkume by his commander, fellow officers and colleagues at Sandhurst were inspiring, and commended him for representing Kenya at the prestigious military academy.

He wished Lenkume well as he begins his military career, urging him to serve with distinction.

“Hearty congratulations, 2 Lt Isaac Lenkume, on your well-deserved commission today. Hearing the descriptions of you by your commander, other officers, and your colleagues at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was truly inspiring. Thank you for flying the Kenyan flag so high,” part of the statement read.

What Isaac Lenkume’s Sandhurst Training Entailed

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is the British Army’s officer training academy, where officer cadets undergo intensive military training before receiving their commissions.

Lieutenant Isaac Lenkume underwent the 44-week Regular Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, a program designed to prepare officer cadets for leadership and command roles in the military.

The course is divided into three terms, each building on the skills developed in the previous phase.

• Junior Term: Lenkume would have undertaken foundational military training, including fieldcraft, physical fitness, military skills and basic leadership and decision-making.
• Intermediate Term: The training progresses to leadership and command, with officer cadets developing their ability to lead teams, plan operations and make decisions in demanding situations. The term also includes academic training and preparation for their future roles within their respective regiments or corps.
• Senior Term: The final phase focuses on applying leadership and tactical skills through more complex military exercises. Cadets are assessed on their ability to command and operate effectively before completing the course and receiving their commissions.

The soldiering component of the Sandhurst course equips officer cadets with the fundamental skills required for military service. Training covers basic fieldcraft, survival skills, first aid, weapons handling and maintaining personal equipment.

Cadets also learn how the Army operates and the responsibilities that come with being a soldier and an officer.

Officer Cadets also have the opportunity to train with other nations, such as training exercises in Oman and exchanges with the United States’ West Point Academy.

Sovereign’s Parade

The Sovereign’s Parade marks the completion of the Regular Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the formal commissioning of officer cadets.

The ceremony is attended by family members, friends and invited guests, who gather at Old College Square to watch the graduating cadets take part in the final parade.

During the ceremony, outstanding cadets receive awards including the Sword of Honour, Overseas Sword and the Queen’s Medal, recognizing exceptional performance during the course.

The parade traditionally concludes with the Adjutant riding up the steps of Old College and through the Grand Entrance behind the graduating cadets. After commissioning, the officers join the academy’s alumni network.
