Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has been compared to the late President Mwai Kibaki, whom millions of Kenyans remember as one of the country’s most transformative leaders. On September 25, 2026, leaders from Nyeri County, Kibaki’s home, likened the legal professor cum politician to the great leader who served as President from 2002 to early 2013. This comes as the DP intensifies his onslaught in Mt Kenya, ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
Othaya Member of Parliament Wambugu Wainaina praised Kindiki’s development-focused engagements in Nyeri County.
Speaking in Nyeri on Friday during the DP’s event, Wainaina likened him to Kibaki, citing what he described as his calm approach and focus on development.
“We have seen a second Kibaki in our Deputy President. If you remember Kibaki, he used to speak calmly; he did not insult anyone, and he quietly went about his work. You can now see the development. The Deputy President has come here; he speaks calmly, and you can see the development. Your Excellency, continue in that way. We know we have our Kibaki of tomorrow,” Wainaina said.
The MP also thanked Kindiki for government projects being implemented in Nyeri, particularly in Othaya.
“I want to tell you, Your Excellency, that you should take our gratitude back to the people of Nyeri. We, the people of Nyeri, are proud of the development brought to our county. When you go to our home in Othaya, we have been given a very large hospital here in Nyeri County, one of the largest hospitals in the Mount Kenya region. It is here in our county,” Wainaina said.
Kindiki Lists Sh22 Billion Nyeri Projects
Kindiki said the government was investing KSh22 billion in Nyeri County through the housing fund, with the money going towards affordable housing, a fresh produce market, and student accommodation.
“We are spending Sh22 billion in Nyeri County under the housing fund to build affordable housing projects, to build a fresh produce market and also to build student accommodation hostels for our students in universities and technical training institutes,” he said.
During the same engagement, Kindiki highlighted several other government projects in the county.
He said 775 kilometres of roads were being tarmacked across Nyeri at a cost of Sh45 billion.
He also cited Sh650 million allocated to connect an additional 12,000 households to the national electricity grid. Kieni Constituency was allocated Sh364 million for connections targeting about 5,000 households, according to figures cited during the engagement.
On agriculture, Kindiki highlighted measures targeting production costs and farmer incomes, including lower prices for fertiliser, maize seed and sexed semen. He also pointed to efforts to improve returns for dairy and coffee farmers.
He further cited employment opportunities expected from construction projects, recruitment in the public sector and security services, as well as overseas employment programmes and digital work opportunities through Jitume laboratories and ICT hubs.
Kindiki’s Growing Mt Kenya Presence
Kindiki has intensified his engagements across the Mt Kenya region, with his visits combining development inspections, meetings with local leaders, community engagements and political activities.
His tours have focused on government projects in areas such as roads, healthcare, markets, electricity, affordable housing and agriculture.
Across Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi, the engagements have focused on road construction, markets, water and healthcare projects.
In Meru, more than 500 kilometres of roads have been cited at a reported cost of over Sh42 billion, while Embu has featured the Kiambere bulk water project and the planned upgrade of Embu Level Five Hospital.
In Tharaka Nithi, the focus has included ongoing road works and plans to redesign the Nithi Bridge at an estimated cost of Sh7 billion.
On September 19, elders from the Gikuyu, Embu, Mbeere and Meru communities endorsed Kindiki as their spokesperson and called for unity in the Mt Kenya region and Kindiki accepted the elders’ directive and pledged to work towards preserving the region’s unity.
The Deputy President has been urging residents to assess leaders based on their development record while rooting for support for President William Ruto’s administration.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has also pledged to use his position as Mt Kenya’s political kingpin to foster unity across the region, dismissing efforts to divide it into Mt Kenya East and Mt Kenya West.
Speaking in Nyeri on September 25, Kindiki said regional elders had entrusted him with the responsibility of bringing leaders together and assured him of their backing in that mission.
He said elders drawn from the Njuri Ncheke, Kiama Kia Ma, Kikuyu Council of Elders, Gema elders, Nyangi Ndiriri and the Mbeere Council of Elders had tasked him with promoting cohesion across the region.
According to Kindiki, the elders who presided over his coronation specifically cautioned against attempts by some politicians to create divisions between Mt Kenya East and Mt Kenya West.
The Deputy President also ruled out retaliating against leaders who have criticized him, saying his focus would remain on strengthening unity and cooperation within the region.
