Teachers seeking to own houses under the affordable housing programme will soon be able to pay for the units directly from their salaries, President William Ruto has announced.
Speaking during the World Teachers' Day celebrations on Monday, October 5, Ruto announced that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Affordable Housing Board (AHB) are working on a check-off system for teachers.
Under the system, teachers who want the housing units will have their salaries deducted directly towards the payment of the units.
"We are now making those homes easier to acquire. AHB is working with TSC on a check-off system so that you can pay for your home directly from your salary," Ruto stated.
According to the Head of State, the new system will make it easier for teachers to be allocated houses and adequately pay for them without much struggle.
At the same time, the government will also work with teachers' SACCOs to design housing financing that fits each teacher, and ensure each is allocated a house they can afford based on their earnings.
"We are also partnering with teachers' SACCOs to design financing that fits teachers' income," the President added.
During the event held in Kasarani, Ruto also announced that the government is reserving one in every five affordable houses built specifically for teachers, citing an agreement signed by the teachers' unions and AHB.
"We are opening a new path to home ownership for teachers. We committed to reserving 20 per cent of affordable homes for teachers. In September 2025, KNUT and KUPPET, with the Affordable Housing Board, signed an agreement to allow teachers to reserve one in five affordable houses," he said.
The Affordable Housing Programme categorises applicants by their monthly income, with different housing options available under each income band. The units are divided into social units, Affordable units and market-rate units.
Social housing is reserved for Kenyans earning up to Ksh19,999 per month, while affordable housing targets those earning between Ksh20,000 and Ksh149,999.
Applicants earning above Ksh150,000 per month fall under the affordable middle-class category, with the government offering different unit sizes depending on household needs and income levels.
Kenyans can apply through the Boma Yangu platform by accessing eCitizen and selecting the Boma Yangu tab, or by registering through the Boma Yangu website or USSD code *832#.
Applicants are required to activate their Boma Yangu accounts with Ksh200, which is credited to their e-wallet, before completing their profiles and providing the required personal information and documentation.
Meanwhile, the government has announced increases in unit prices of 20 and 10 per cent , respectively, for affordable and market-rate units, with social housing prices remaining the same.
