Kamau Ngotho of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has won the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, succeeding the late David Njuguna Kiaraho, who died in March 2026. The IEBC Returning Officer, Antony Njiraine, declared Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru duly elected Member of the National Assembly for Ol Kalou Constituency after garnering 35,440 votes. According to the electoral body, Samuel Muchina Nyagah (UDA) finished second with 5,450 votes.
“IEBC thanks the voters of Ol Kalou Constituency, candidates, political parties, election officials, security agencies, observers, the media and all stakeholders for contributing to a peaceful and orderly electoral process,” said the Commission in a statement on Friday, July 17, 2026.

The Ol Kalou by-election was viewed as a major political test between President William Ruto’s UDA and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s. UDA backed Samuel Muchina Nyagah, while DCP threw its support behind Sammy Kamau Ngotho, turning the contest into a battle for influence in Nyandarua County and the wider Mt Kenya region.
Other candidates who contested for the seat included Edwin Muchiri of the Party of National Unity (PNU), Stephen Wanyoike of the National Liberal Party (NLP), independent candidate Rachael Njoroge, Edward Mwaniki of the Kenya Moja Movement (KMM), Abdifatah Hussein of the Federal Party of Kenya (FPK), Timothy Kamau of the People’s Renaissance Movement (PRM), and Moses Njoroge Macharia of the Jubilee Party.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) recorded a total of 73,480 registered voters across 144 polling stations in the constituency.
Kamau Ngotho Profile: Education and Political Career
Kamau Ngotho comes from Ol Kalou Constituency in Nyandarua County and is regarded within the constituency as a grassroots leader, with strong local networks built over more than a decade in politics.
He attended AC Primary School in the local Karau/Kaimbaga area of Ol Kalou.
Ngotho then joined Utumishi Boys High School for his secondary education.
Upon completing high school, Ngotho enrolled at the University of Nairobi (UoN), where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics.
Kamau Ngotho began his political career in 2013, when he was elected the first Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Karau Ward on a TNA/DP ticket.
In 2017, he sought re‑election as an independent candidate after disagreements over party nominations and narrowly lost the seat by fewer than 200 votes.
Ngotho served as a Protocol Officer and Political Advisor in the Office of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a role he held until the period following Gachagua’s impeachment.
Kamau Ngotho later joined the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), where he served as Nyandarua County Coordinator, helping to build party structures at the grassroots level.
Who Is Samuel Muchina Nyaga?
Samuel Muchina Nyaga was born and raised in Nyandarua County.
For his higher education, Samuel Muchina studied at Mt Kenya University’s Nairobi campus between 2003 and 2008 and holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics.
Before joining politics, Muchina served as a Constituency Development Fund (CDF) manager and was also a longtime aide to the late Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho.
These roles gave him experience in education bursary management, constituency development projects and grassroots administration.
Following Kiaraho’s death in March, Samuel Muchina Nyagah emerged as the UDA candidate for the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
His candidature received backing from UDA leaders, who argued that electing a representative from the ruling party would strengthen cooperation between the constituency and the national government.
