Starlink had 27,616 fixed internet subscriptions in Kenya on 30th June 2026. That’s 2,617 more than in March and 10,191 more than a year earlier, growth of 58.5%. The figures are in the Communications Authority of Kenya’s sector statistics report for April to June 2026,

In the first week of July, Starlink stopped taking new customers in seven counties: Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Machakos, Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Kwale. Anyone trying to order there is told “Starlink service is currently at capacity in your area” and offered a deposit to join a waitlist, with no date for when orders will reopen. So June’s 27,616 is the last count from before the pause.

Starlink is almost the whole of satellite internet in Kenya. It has 27,616 of the country’s 27,695 satellite subscriptions, 99.7%, and 1.0% of all 2,838,656 fixed internet subscriptions.

Every figure is from the CA’s quarterly reports for each period. We reported in June when Starlink passed 25,000.

In November 2024 Starlink stopped taking new customers in Nairobi and the counties around it, for the same reason. The pause lasted about seven months and lifted in June 2025.

The CA’s figures show what happened to Starlink’s count in that time. It fell from 19,146 in December 2024 to 17,066 in March 2025, a loss of 2,080 subscribers, or 10.9%. It barely moved in the next quarter. Once sign-ups reopened, Starlink went back to adding between 2,000 and 2,800 subscriptions every three months, and that’s how it got to 27,616.

Before it reopened, Starlink switched on a ground station in Kenya in early 2025, a facility on the ground that connects its satellites to the internet. That cut latency, the delay on each request, from about 120 milliseconds to about 53. Speeds have been under pressure since. Ookla measured a median Starlink download of 34.55 Mbps in Kenya in March 2026, against about 47 Mbps a year earlier.

Starlink’s satellites can only serve so many homes in one area at a time. When an area fills up, adding more customers would slow everyone down, so Starlink closes new orders there and puts people on a waitlist until it adds capacity.

So if you’re in one of those seven counties and want Starlink, you can put down a deposit and wait, but Starlink hasn’t said for how long.

When the pause began, Starlink’s kit cost KES 49,900 in Kenya, down from KES 89,000, and could be rented for KES 1,950 a month. Its cheapest plan was KES 1,300 a month for 50 GB. We listed the prices in July.

Starlink may soon have a satellite rival. Amazon, which is building its own satellite internet network, applied for a Kenyan licence in April.
