Somalia president congratulates Liban Ahmed Hassan on election as new Galmudug State leader
Hassan welcomed the outcome of the election and called on the incoming leadership to focus on issues affecting residents across the state, including insecurity, disputes between communities and limited access to public services.
Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has congratulated Liban Ahmed Hassan on his election as the new Galmudug State leader and Abdiweli Ibrahim Garyare as his deputy following Thursday’s vote by members of the state assembly in Dhuusamareeb.
Liban thanked those who supported his bid for the leadership position after the assembly elected him to head the state.
“I would like to thank everyone who worked with me to make it possible for me to become the President of Galmudug today,” he said.
Hassan welcomed the outcome of the election and called on the incoming leadership to focus on issues affecting residents across the state, including insecurity, disputes between communities and limited access to public services.
The new administration is expected to work with different communities to address local conflicts and strengthen peaceful relations, while also pursuing development programmes across Galmudug.
The president also highlighted the importance of improving infrastructure and public services, areas that remain important to communities seeking better access to essential facilities and economic opportunities.

Galmudug has experienced clan-related disputes and security challenges, making efforts to bring communities together an important task for its political leadership.
The election also comes as Somalia continues to pursue changes to its electoral system to increase public participation in choosing political representatives.
In July, Galmudug held local elections as part of efforts to expand citizens’ involvement in governance. The process formed part of wider political developments in the country, where electoral participation and the role of citizens in selecting their leaders have remained key issues.
Hassan said the election reflected progress in the state’s political process and the participation of residents in determining its leadership.
Liban and Abdiweli will now be expected to turn the priorities outlined during the transition into policies and programmes for the state. Their administration will also need to work with the federal government and other stakeholders on matters affecting security, governance and development.
Galmudug is one of Somalia’s federal member states, with Dhuusamareeb serving as its administrative capital. Its leadership is responsible for managing state-level affairs while working within Somalia’s federal system.
The president wished the newly elected leaders success as they prepare to assume their responsibilities, with their performance likely to be judged by progress in addressing local disputes, improving services and advancing development across the state.
