Kenya ended their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Challenge League A campaign on a winning note after defeating Papua New Guinea (PNG) by 88 runs in their final match at Nairobi Gymkhana Ground on Saturday.
Kenya's innings got off to a difficult start after PNG won the toss and elected to field. The hosts lost early wickets and found themselves under pressure before Dhiren Gondaria steadied the innings with a composed performance.
Gondaria top-scored for Kenya with 68 runs from 84 deliveries, providing the foundation for the recovery. Sachin Gill added 35 from 27 balls to increase the scoring rate and keep the hosts in contention for a competitive total.
Francis Mutua then provided the late fireworks, scoring an unbeaten 40 from just 29 deliveries. His innings included three sixes and helped Kenya finish strongly at 230 for seven.
Rakep Patel also made a valuable contribution, scoring 26 from 29 balls as Kenya recovered from their early setbacks to set PNG a target of 231.
PNG began their chase with Tony Ura scoring 30 from 33 balls, but Kenya's bowlers struck regularly to prevent the visitors from building the partnerships needed to challenge the target.
Captain Assad Vala offered resistance with 42 from 40 deliveries, while Patrick Nou contributed 18 runs. However, the required run rate continued to climb as Kenya maintained pressure on the visitors.
Shem Ngoche and Vraj Patel led Kenya's bowling attack, claiming three wickets each. Ngoche finished with figures of three for 39, while Vraj took three for 25 in 6.1 overs.
Mutua also delivered with the ball, taking two wickets for 17 runs in three overs to help dismiss PNG for 142.
His all-round performance earned him the Player of the Match award after contributing an unbeaten 40 with the bat and two wickets.
The victory marked a positive end to Kenya's three-year campaign, which also saw the country successfully host the 2024 and 2026 editions of the competition. Jersey hosted the 2025 series.
While Kenya finished their campaign with a victory, the final round also determined the two teams that will progress from Group A to the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off.
Jersey and Kuwait secured the qualification places, keeping their hopes of reaching the global tournament alive.
Jersey finished top of the six-team standings with 25 points after winning 12 of their 15 matches, losing two and drawing one. Kuwait finished second with 20 points after recording nine victories, four defeats, one no-result and one tie.
Denmark finished third with 13 points, followed by PNG in fourth place with 12 points. Qatar and Kenya completed the standings in fifth and sixth positions respectively, each collecting 10 points.
Kenya finished with four victories, nine defeats and two no-results from their 15 matches. They had a net run rate of -0.685, narrowly behind Qatar's -0.680.
The final standings confirmed Jersey's dominance throughout the competition, with the team finishing five points ahead of Kuwait.
Jersey also ended their campaign with a 34-run victory over Qatar in another rain-affected match played at Ruaraka Sports Club Ground on Saturday.
The match was reduced to 24 overs per side after morning showers affected play at both venues.
After Qatar elected to field, Jersey struggled early and were reduced to 19 for two before Zak Tribe steadied the innings with an important 53 from 42 balls. His innings included three fours and three sixes.
Charlie Brennan supported him with 33 from 24 deliveries, while Josh Lawrenson added an aggressive 40 from 27 balls to help Jersey recover.
The lower order chipped in with valuable runs, allowing Jersey to post 194 for eight. Benjamin Ward scored nine, while wicketkeeper Jake Dunford remained unbeaten on eight.
Qatar's Mirza Mohammed Baig was the leading bowler with three wickets for 25 runs, while Muhammad Asim claimed two for 44.
Qatar's chase was led by Zubair Ali, who scored 54 from 43 balls. Imal Liyanage added 25 from 22 deliveries, while captain Baig contributed 20 from 14 balls.
However, Jersey continued to take wickets at crucial moments, preventing Qatar from building the partnerships required to keep the chase alive.
Ward and Tribe proved decisive with the ball, taking four wickets each. Ward finished with four for 29, while Tribe claimed four for 16 in three overs as Qatar were bowled out for 160 in 22.2 overs.
Tribe was named Player of the Match for his contribution with both bat and ball, having scored a half-century before taking four wickets.
His performance capped an impressive campaign in which he finished as the competition's leading run-scorer with 662 runs in 15 matches.
His teammate Lawrenson was second among the top run-scorers with 612 runs, while Kenya's Rakep Patel finished third with 588 runs.
PNG's Kabua Morea topped the bowling charts with 27 wickets from 15 matches. Denmark's Saif Ahmad followed with 26 wickets, while Lawrenson finished third with 24.
With the Challenge League A campaign concluded, attention now shifts to the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off, scheduled to take place in Nepal from December 4 to December 21, 2026.
For Kenya, the final victory over PNG offers a positive finish to a campaign that saw them compete against five other teams while hosting two editions of the international competition.
