Kenya’s Jeremy Rieck, Macrine Kalombo and Neo Olengo return to the pool this afternoon seeking improved times after missing out on final places on day two of swimming action at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The trio failed to progress in their respective 100m races on Tuesday but will have another opportunity to strengthen their performances as the competition continues.
Rieck clocked 59.15 seconds in Heat Four of the men’s 100m Backstroke but fell short of qualification. Kalombo also missed out in the women’s 100m Breaststroke after recording 1:23.33 in Heat Two, while Olengo posted 1:08.49 in Heat Three of the men’s equivalent event.
Despite missing out on another final, the Kenyan is relishing his first Youth Olympic Games experience and believes the international exposure will benefit his development.
“It’s quite educational and when I go back to my training, I’ll take what I’ve learned from here and implement it in training so that I can become better and faster,” he said.
Kalombo will compete in the women’s 200m Individual Medley this afternoon before rounding off her campaign in the 50m Breaststroke on November 5. She is targeting personal best times and a place in the final.
“I have 200m tomorrow and 50 breaststroke on the next day, and I’m hoping for improved personal best and good times. I’m very proud of myself and I’m hoping for the best,” she said.
She added that interacting with swimmers from different backgrounds had exposed her to new training approaches and mental preparation techniques.
Olengo will return for the men’s 50m Freestyle this afternoon before completing his campaign in the 50m Breaststroke on November 5.
Meanwhile, Isabelle Mwangi is yet to make her debut. She will compete in the women’s 50m Freestyle this afternoon before rounding off her campaign in the 200m Freestyle on November 6.
The four swimmers qualified for the Games after strong performances at the 2026 ANOCA Zone Five Youth Games, where Kenya topped the swimming medal standings with 12 gold, 10 silver and one bronze.
The swimming programme runs until November 6, giving the Kenyan quartet further opportunities to improve their times and gain valuable international experience.
