Kenya’s Norman Mondo will headline the ANZA Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Contenders event against Martin Chite in a flyweight bout at The Alchemist in Nairobi on Thursday.

The main event will feature two of Kenya’s most exciting amateur prospects, both accomplished grapplers capable of competing across all aspects of MMA.

Their encounter promises a fast-paced contest featuring explosive exchanges, scrambles and action on the ground.

In the featherweight co-main event, ANZA fan favourite Samuel Laurian returns to face Olanya Richard in a highly anticipated matchup.

Known for his explosive style, relentless aggression and powerful takedowns, Laurian has repeatedly thrilled fans with his performances and will be looking to deliver another memorable outing.

Asad Abdulkadir will also make his much-anticipated MMA debut against Amos Eboso following his return to Kenya from Sudan and Oman.

Abdulkadir is regarded as a promising MMA competitor, but he faces a stern test against Eboso, a power boxer preparing for his fourth appearance inside the ANZA MMA cage.

Another featherweight contest will see Hamza Fahim take on Joshua Ojow as Fahim targets a third consecutive victory. Fahim heads into the bout after recording finishes in his previous two ANZA appearances.

The undercard will feature a lightweight clash between Shadrack Otieno and Mohamed Salim. Salim brings international competition experience from MMA Dar, alongside training experience gained in Saudi Arabia.

The remaining bouts will feature fighters from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, highlighting the growing depth of MMA talent across East Africa.

ANZA founder Peng Chen said the Contenders series was designed to provide emerging fighters with regular competitive opportunities and a pathway into professional MMA.

“ANZA Contenders is about giving fighters the opportunity to prove themselves,” said Chen.

“We want to create a platform where the best emerging fighters in Kenya and across the region can compete regularly, develop their skills and ultimately make the transition into professional MMA.”

Chen added that the quality of fighters on the card reflected the sport’s rapid growth across the region, with more athletes getting opportunities to showcase their abilities.

“The level of talent on this card shows just how quickly the sport is growing in East Africa,” he said.

Through the Contenders series, ANZA MMA hopes to strengthen the regional talent pool by giving upcoming fighters opportunities to gain experience, improve their skills and progress towards professional careers.

Thursday’s event will bring together a mix of promising prospects and returning competitors, with Mondo and Chite’s flyweight showdown set to headline a card showcasing the continued growth of mixed martial arts in East Africa.
