A Spanish footballer has died after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a second-division match, leading to the postponement of several football fixtures in the country.

The player, Jesús de Miguel, 30, was a striker for CD Tenerife, a club based in Spain's Canary Islands. He was injured Monday night in a match against FC Andorra when visiting goalkeeper Jesús Owono collided with him while trying to clear a ball.

De Miguel chased a long pass when Owono came out to meet him, and the goalkeeper's knee struck the striker in the chest. The Tenerife forward collapsed, with players from both teams immediately calling for medical assistance. The incident occurred towards the end of the match, which was abandoned in the 108th minute as medical teams attended to De Miguel. Owono was shown a red card following the collision.

De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest following the collision and was rushed to Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care. Although Tenerife initially reported that he was in a serious but stable condition, the club later announced that his neurological condition had worsened before confirming his death on Tuesday.

“Heartbroken and unable to believe it is true, we announce the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alamada on Tuesday, November 3, at 8.00 am,” Tenerife said.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has since postponed Tuesday's matches in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina following De Miguel's death. The federation has also called off a planned presentation of Spain's Under-21 fixture against Japan as Spanish football paid tribute to the late striker.

De Miguel was born in Madrid and began his career with Leganés' reserve team before moving to other clubs in Spain's lower divisions. He helped Internacional de Madrid earn promotion in 2018 before joining Castellón, where he scored 16 goals and provided six assists during the club's promotion-winning campaign. He moved to Tenerife in 2025.
