NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 – Kenya’s tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi is set to make history on Tuesday when she takes to the court for her maiden WTA main-draw appearance at the inaugural Angola Ladies Open WTA 125 tournament in Luanda.

The milestone marks a significant step in the 22-year-old’s professional career, with the occasion made even more special by the fact that it comes on African soil.

The tournament, running from November 2-8 at the Kikuxi Tennis Academy, is Angola’s first-ever WTA 125 event.

It features a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles competition, with a total prize purse of Sh14.9 million (US$115,000).

Okutoyi begins her singles campaign against eighth seed Sofya Lansere of Angola on Tuesday as she seeks to make an impression on the WTA stage.

The Kenyan heads into the competition following an impressive transition into professional tennis after graduating from Auburn University. She has steadily climbed the world rankings, reaching career-high positions of 415 in singles and 174 in doubles in 2026.

Her WTA main-draw debut adds another milestone to an already remarkable career.

Okutoyi made history in 2022 when she became the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam title, partnering with Rose Marie Nijkamp to claim the Wimbledon girls’ doubles crown. She went on to secure women’s singles gold at the 2024 African Games, further cementing her place among Kenya’s leading tennis players.

Beyond the singles competition, Okutoyi will also represent East Africa in the doubles draw, partnering Burundi’s Sada Nahimana.

The Kenyan-Burundian duo will open their campaign against France’s Tiphanie Lemaitre and Egypt’s Sandra Samir in a first-round encounter that brings together players from three African nations and Europe.

The Luanda tournament offers Okutoyi another opportunity to test herself against international competition as she continues her rise through the professional ranks.

With the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games also featuring prominently in her long-term ambitions, the Kenyan will be keen to use the WTA 125 platform as another stepping stone in her pursuit of greater success on the global stage.
