NAIROBI, Kenya, November 1, 2026 – Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi says Kenya will gain a lot from the exhibition match between European giants Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam at the Raila Odinga International Stadium on January 5, next year.
Mwangi said the fixture is an opportunity for Kenya to tap into the massive global audience of both clubs.
“We have built the Talanta Sports City and we are almost done with it. That is why we have managed to secure a top-notch match between Bayern Munich and Ajax. We want everybody to know that Kenya has a world-class stadium. The two teams (Bayern and Ajax) have a huge global following and therefore them coming here it means we will be able to ride on that and brand the country positively through their platforms,” the PS said.
Mwangi also reiterated the economic boom that will emerge from the match and its longstanding effects in the aftermath.
“The economic impact of that period of the match and beyond will be huge and that is the legacy of our President, Dr William Ruto,” he said.

The record Bundesliga champions have stepped on African soil before, when they took part in the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup that was held in Morocco.
The Bavarians won the title after beating hosts Raja Casablanca 2-0 in the final.
While Ajax Amsterdam have a famously deep connection to African football — most notably through its 21-year partnership with its former South African satellite academy club, Ajax Cape Town (now Cape Town Spurs) — this match marks the first time in history that the senior Ajax Amsterdam squad will play an official match on African soil.
Both teams enjoy huge following on social media in addition to boasting huge fanbases across the world, over the years.
For instance, Bayern has more than 200m combined social media following in more than ten languages and across 40 accounts.
In August 2026, the German club announced that their social media channels recorded over 1.1 billion interactions and 15 billion video views for 2025/26 season.
It is noted that Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook are the main drivers of the social media growth.
