In a recent announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined the company’s strategic roadmap, focusing on simplifying AI product offerings and enhancing user experience.
The plan includes the release of GPT-4.5, internally known as “Orion,” followed by the more advanced GPT-5 model.
Altman acknowledged the complexity of OpenAI’s current model selection process and expressed a commitment to creating a more intuitive user experience.
“We want AI to ‘just work’ for you; we realize how complicated our model and product offerings have gotten,” he stated. The goal is to eliminate the need for users to choose between various models, instead providing a unified system that intelligently manages tasks.

OpenAI plans to release GPT-4.5, codenamed “Orion,” in the coming weeks. This model will be OpenAI’s iteration without “chain-of-thought” reasoning capabilities, marking a significant milestone before the transition to more advanced models.
Following Orion, OpenAI plans to launch GPT-5, a comprehensive model that unifies the O-series and GPT-series technologies. GPT-5 will integrate various features, including voice, canvas, search, and deep research capabilities, aiming to handle a wide range of tasks seamlessly.
Altman emphasized the importance of creating systems that “can use all our tools, know when to think for a long time or not, and generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks.”
To make advanced AI more accessible, OpenAI will offer GPT-5 across different subscription tiers:
- Free Users: Unlimited chat access to GPT-5 at the standard intelligence setting, subject to abuse thresholds.
- Plus Subscribers: Access to GPT-5 at a higher level of intelligence.
- Pro Subscribers: Access to GPT-5 at an even higher level of intelligence.
This tiered approach ensures that a broad spectrum of users can benefit from GPT-5’s capabilities according to their needs.
With the upcoming release of GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, the company aims to set new standards in artificial intelligence, emphasizing seamless integration and enhanced functionality.
As artificial intelligence evolves, OpenAI’s initiatives signal a significant shift towards more intuitive and accessible AI solutions, promising to transform how users engage with artificial intelligence in various applications.
