Murder on the roads: KeNHA blames funding gaps for poor roads

Description (show more)

It is a case of a blame game among government agencies—or perhaps, blaming human nature. The Kenya National Highways Authority, KeNHA, the agency mandated to develop and maintain Kenya’s highways, is now blaming the National Treasury for inadequate funding needed to execute its mandate. KeNHA says it is underfunded, a situation it says has compromised its functionality and ability to maintain the country’s road network. As Seth Olale reports, the authority says dualling the remaining 2,500 kilometres of priority road networks across the country is key to preventing road crashes. But critics accuse the agency of remaining conspicuously silent whenever deadly accidents occur.
