How Youth can see opportunities on going green and create jobs

Description (show more)

A delegation from European Parliament, development committee, visited the country to see what EU has been doing on: improving livelihood, assisting Kenya in green transition, supporting youth and women in entrepreneurship. Irene Giribaldi, head of operations EU, said that the visit has convinced the delegation that they were on the right path in sensitizing youths on climate change challenges and how youths can see opportunities on going green and create jobs. In venturing into business sector, we met Doreen Mutune, a youth from Makueni County who was showcasing her products at Machakos ATC centre. Mutune who is doing honey value addition says she is adding Baobab, Chilli, Cloves among other food spices so as to make honey a superfood. “Why I chose to do honey value addition was because it makes the honey be of high value. As a farmer I make more profit as compared when I sell it as pure honey. The customer also benefits from the value added honey as they enjoy a better superfood as opposed to taking natural honey”, added Mutune. We came across Shem Mecheo who is doing beetroot jam, he says the event has provided them to showcase their products as well as interact with other entrepreneurs. In culmination with EU goals, Mecheo calls upon Kenyan farmers to do organic farming which will assist in curbing chronic diseases such as Cancer. “Strawberry being quite used to make jam, we wanted to cross the bridge where expectant mothers needed to eat beetroot though raw one is palatable we decided to make this product”, he adds. www.Farmers.co.ke is the site for authoritative multimedia agricultural and agribusiness content. #FarmKenya Visit us today for farming news, agribusiness tips, practical expert advice and industry updates.
