Millers call for stronger farm-level food safety controls

Description (show more)

The cereal milling industry is calling for the strengthening of food safety controls across the entire agricultural value chain, with industry stakeholders warning that contamination risks often emerge long before grain reaches the mill. The millers now say food safety from the farm level will be critical in tackling aflatoxin contamination, improving nutrition and protecting consumers. The association, which represents over 90 percent of Kenya's milling capacity and approximately 40 percent of maize milling capacity, says the industry has invested heavily in food fortification and safety systems.
