High Court declares law blocking retired president from political office unconstitutional

In a new twist, the High Court has declared unconstitutional a law blocking a retired head of state from holding political office, coming barely a week after a similar court blocked a retired president from participating in active politics. The new ruling that leaves the judiciary in a precarious position coincided with High Court Justice Bahati Mwamuye's ruling nullifying Sections of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act and Section 6 in its entirety, which sought to withdraw, reduce, withhold or otherwise disadvantageously vary retirement benefits due to a former President.
