Why We Chose To Grow Organic Traditional African Vegetables In Our Farm | Nursery & Transplanting
Description (show more)
One of the most exciting parts of building a farm is deciding what to grow first. In this episode, we take you through the next phase of the Kanya Farm journey as we begin growing a selection of traditional African vegetables including managu, terere, sagaa, mitoo and pumpkin leaves. These are not the only crops we plan to grow on the farm, but they are among the first crops we have chosen to start with as we continue learning, experimenting and building a farm that reflects our values around food, health and our connection to the soil. We share why we chose these particular vegetables, our approach to growing them organically, the work that has gone into preparing the land, and some of the lessons we are already learning along the way. For many years, traditional African vegetables fed families across the continent and remained an important part of our food systems. Today, they continue to offer incredible nutritional value while presenting opportunities for farmers looking to serve a growing market. As always, we are documenting the journey exactly as it is, the wins, the challenges, the questions and the lessons. We hope this episode inspires more conversations around indigenous foods, organic farming and the importance of understanding what it takes to grow the food we eat. Welcome back to Kanya Farm as we continue reclaiming our identity through the soil.
