The River Yala Massacre: Are Kenyans Ignoring River Yala Because They Hate Ruto?

In this episode, I examine the unresolved River Yala deaths, the calls for a public inquest, and the renewed political debate involving former President Uhuru Kenyatta, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, and President William Ruto. Reports published by the BBC and The Guardian documented bodies recovered from River Yala, including cases in which families travelled from other parts of Kenya while searching for missing relatives. The reports also cited concerns raised by human-rights organisations and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority. However, suspicion is not the same as proof. Authorities have not publicly established that Uhuru Kenyatta or Fred Matiang’i personally ordered the deaths, and viewers should distinguish between political responsibility, institutional accountability and criminal liability. Fred Matiang’i has called for a broad public inquest into River Yala and other unresolved killings. He has said that investigations should not focus only on one administration or one political faction. That raises difficult questions: Should former officials be summoned? Should all administrations be examined? Can Kenya investigate alleged extrajudicial killings without turning the process into a political weapon? The episode also investigates the unfolding crisis at Karibu Homes in Athi River, Machakos County. Residents in affected blocks, including Blocks M, N and P, have reported visible vertical cracks running along parts of the buildings. The development reportedly contains approximately 500 units across 63 apartment blocks. Machakos County issued an enforcement notice citing alleged breaches, including occupation without a certificate of compliance and concerns over substandard buildings. Residents say they have been forced to leave homes they purchased while continuing to repay mortgages and other loans. Some homeowners also say a government assessment involving five agencies raised structural concerns and recommended measures including retrofitting.
