"My Brother Wronged Kenyans!"– Sister of Ali Salim Gichunge on Guilt & Forgiveness | Iko Nini Pt 2

Description (show more)

πŸ•ŠοΈ Part 2 of our conversation with Amina, older sister of Ali Salim Gichunge, the man named as the leader of the January 15, 2019 DusitD2 attack on 14 Riverside Drive, Nairobi, where 21 people were killed. Robo, who works with the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) on prevention, joins her with Mwaf and Rowbow. Amina talks about the media finding her after the attack, Ali's call from Somalia, and the anger that made her want nothing to do with Kenya: "My brother wronged Kenyans, but I am a Kenyan." She describes the first meeting with ATPU, CID and the NCTC, the counselling that followed, the day a victim's relative hugged her instead of blaming her, her mother's arrest and the "black widow" label, and how tailoring became her therapy. Robo explains how a normal boy becomes a violent extremist, why "terrorism starts with a local boy", the signs families can spot, why there are victims on both sides, and how disengagement, rehabilitation and reintegration work. Amina ends with an apology to the victims' families on behalf of Ali. Views and claims in this conversation are the guests' own. We remember the victims of the DusitD2 attack and their families.
