Five Kenyan teams set for Safari Sevens at Nyayo
Description (show more)
Kenya will be represented by five teams at this year’s edition of the Safari Sevens rugby tournament, which starts on Friday at the Nyayo National Stadium. The men’s team, Shujaa, has retained six emerging stars who were part of the squad that won the Africa Sevens rugby title a week ago. The women’s competition at the Safari Sevens will be played in a round-robin format, with Kenya represented by three teams — the Lionesses, the Junior Lionesses and the Kenya Cubs. All three teams are training together as one unit alongside a fourth team, the Kenya Juniors, who will compete at the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal. The Lionesses have adopted the same training programme as Shujaa as they aim to achieve a consistent level of performance across the teams. The coaches also want the players to remain fit ahead of next year’s 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers. The Safari Sevens marks the final phase of the selection process for the upcoming season.
