MPs face scrutiny over failure to amend election results livestreaming law
Description (show more)
The failure by the members of the National Assembly to correct Section 39 (1) (g) of the Elections Act of 2011 on election results livestreaming, which was found by the courts to be defective, has seen the legislators come under sharp focus for abdicating duty, in what has become a national controversy on whether or not the provision for livestreaming of election results will be part of next year’s election. Both the High Court and the Court of Appeal found that the law, which was first passed 15 years ago, was unconstitutional as the livestreamed results were declared to have no role during the tallying process. As Emmanuel Too now explains, the legislators say the changes would have contravened a recommendation not to change election laws, less than a year to an election.
