Who Was Wicknell Chivayo?: The Controversial Tycoon Who Knew Presidents — And Died in a Crash?

Wicknell Chivayo was one of Zimbabwe’s most visible and controversial businessmen — a man associated with major government-linked contracts, luxury cars, private jets, public philanthropy and photographs with powerful leaders across Africa. But who was “Sir Wicknell” before the money and presidential access? In this video, we trace his reported journey from a modest upbringing and an earlier fraud conviction to the rise of Intratrek Zimbabwe, the disputed Gwanda Solar Project, the controversy around Zimbabwe’s 2023 election procurement, and his highly publicised relationship with Kenya’s President William Ruto. Chivayo’s death has added a dramatic final chapter. On 30 September 2026, a helicopter crashed in Zimbabwe’s Marondera area, killing all six people aboard, including Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, according to family and police-linked reporting. Authorities said the cause was not immediately known and investigations were under way. Rumours and questions are circulating online, including claims linking the death to political figures. This video separates what is confirmed from what was alleged, denied, investigated or remains unknown. At the time of research, no credible source reviewed for this video established foul play, an assassination, or wrongdoing by William Ruto in connection with the crash. Watch to the end for the timeline of Chivayo’s rise, his presidential connections, the controversies around his businesses, and the unanswered questions surrounding his final journey.
