Matatu operators announce 10% fare hike as fuel prices rise
Description (show more)
Public transport operators have announced a 10 percent increase in fares, a day after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced a sharp rise in fuel prices for the October–November period. Matatu Owners Association President Albert Karakacha says they have arrived at the decision to keep their businesses afloat amid rising operating costs. Karakacha has also faulted the government for failing to honour an agreement reached with industry stakeholders back in May. The agreement reportedly included a freeze on diesel price increases and zero-rating the importation of 100,000 electric vehicles.
