The environment she grew up in was surrounded by muguka, alcohol, and bhang users. Seeking relief from the overwhelming stress, she was introduced to these substances and began using them. At just 15 years old, she found herself engaging in things she never imagined. One night, while intoxicated, she had intercourse with a man. When she regained consciousness, she felt discomfort in her body and rushed to the hospital. Doctors discovered a condom lodged inside her and referred her to Kenyatta Hospital. Thankfully, the medical team managed to remove it from her stomach. Later, she encountered another man and they agreed on a price, But instead of paying her, he violently assaulted her and left her with nothing in the lodging. As she continued selling her body to survive, she endured countless hardships on the streets. Her peers insisted that getting pregnant would help her "fit in." Eventually, she did become pregnant—and even then, she kept working until the very end. She gave birth on the roadside, aided by kind strangers who helped her carry her newborn and get to the hospital. Today, Wilkister Akumu shares her real-life story—how she bore and raised her children on the streets, surviving through selling her body.
