Agnes Mukami’s Story: A Journey of Survival and Strength Agnes Mukami was born and raised in the ghetto, where she has lived her entire life. Growing up, life was extremely difficult—especially after her father passed away. Her mother, who had no job, later fell ill and also passed away. These tragedies left Agnes unable to complete her education. Before her mother’s death, Agnes became pregnant. Sadly, the child’s father refused to take responsibility. Young, unemployed, and expecting a child, Agnes felt she had no choice but to turn to sex work—often accepting the lowest prices—just to survive. A friend introduced her to the trade, and Agnes began working the streets to feed herself. On her first night, she and her friend were arrested, but a kind neighbor helped bail her out. Not long after, she gave birth. Immediately after giving birth, Agnes returned to the streets. She endured everything imaginable to provide for her child. She encountered men with all kinds of demands and did what she had to in order to earn enough to care for her baby. Agnes shares her story to shed light on the harsh realities she faced—losing both parents at a young age and being forced to fend for herself in a world that offered little support.
