Today we welcome Bilian Mary Atieno. She was born in Mathare and raised in Dandora. While pursuing her studies, Bilian’s life took an unexpected turn when she met a man and moved in with him—unaware that he was involved in criminal activities. It wasn’t long before she discovered the truth. She witnessed him carrying a machete, openly telling her he was going out to steal. He would return with food and stolen phones. Unable to cope with his lifestyle, Bilian left and returned to her family home. Shortly after, she discovered she was pregnant. She informed him and pleaded with him to stop stealing for the sake of their unborn child—but he refused to change. One morning, she received a devastating phone call: he had been killed by a mob while attempting to steal. Bilian was left a widow and a young single mother. Faced with desperation and the need to provide for her child, she turned to sex work. She encountered clients with disturbing and extreme demands, and felt compelled to comply in order to earn money.
