Rights group calls for humane response to El Niño rains
Description (show more)
The Kenya Human Rights Commission is demanding the protection of human rights in preparations and interventions for the El Niño rains expected between October and December 2026. The civil society group has condemned arbitrary evictions, arrests and the inhumane treatment of flood victims witnessed during previous floods, saying the incidents exposed the country’s vulnerabilities in disaster management. The demand comes as Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja orders the immediate evacuation of residents living in high-risk riparian areas. Serfine Achieng’ Ouma reports.
