Olkaria operations disrupted as residents protest water shortages, poor roads and jobs
Description (show more)
Operations in the geothermal-rich Olkaria area of Naivasha were disrupted for several hours after Maasai community members blocked the main road, protesting prolonged water shortages, poor roads and limited employment opportunities. The protesters accused KenGen of failing to honour commitments made when more than 200 families were relocated 12 years ago to pave the way for a power plant. Community leaders in Lapland say four villages have gone without water for over a month, forcing women to walk more than 10 kilometres in search of water.
