Murkomen defends voter registration of Kenyans in neighbouring countries
Description (show more)
A fresh political storm is brewing over voter registration in Kenya’s border counties. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen says the government will not stop the registration of Kenyans living in neighbouring countries, dismissing claims that foreigners are being registered to vote in the 2027 General Election. Murkomen says the exercise is meant to allow Kenyans who cross borders for business to exercise their constitutional right to vote. His remarks come as Deputy President Kithure Kindiki issues a warning against political violence, with the country already bracing for an increasingly charged political season. Kamau Mwangi reports. The IEBC has separately said claims of illegal registration of foreigners remain unsubstantiated and that eligible Kenyans living abroad have a right to participate in Kenya’s electoral process.
