Margaret Wanjiku’s Story – Tales by Titus 254 Margaret Wanjiku was born in Korogocho. When she was just three years old, her parents passed away. As she grew older, Margaret eventually left the children’s home and began working. After some time, she met a man, fell in love, and got married. They were blessed with a child. Sadly, her husband was involved in a tragic accident and passed away. Following his death, Margaret had a dispute with her in-laws over property matters. She chose to leave and raise her child on her own. Margaret returned to Korogocho, now faced with the responsibility of providing for herself and her child. She found a job at a hotel. While working there, she noticed that some of her friends seemed to be living well, and she admired their lifestyle. One of her friends introduced her to a different kind of work. She was given clothes—miniskirts—and on her first day, she found a customer. The experience went smoothly. She was taught how to navigate the streets: not to be too greedy, but also not to undersell herself. She was advised never to accept less than 500 shillings. To cope with the demands of street life, Margaret began drinking alcohol and using drugs. She was told it would help her overcome shyness and make it easier to do the work. Under the influence, there was little she felt unable to do. While working in clubs, Margaret began performing various acts to attract customers. Over time, she also started stealing from clients—especially those who appeared wealthy or carried expensive phones—often coordinating with outsiders to carry out the thefts.
